Have you ever thought about what a day in your dream life would look like?
Last week, I posted about an activity where you think of things you like and things you don’t like. If you haven’t done that yet, you can find the article here. It’s often hard for women, who’ve put their own needs on the back burner, to think about what they really want. Yes, you want your parents to be happy, your spouse to be happy and your kids to be happy. But, you deserve happiness too! In fact, you deserve to live your best life!
I remember one client telling me she thought she really wanted to live at the beach, but after a long vacation there with her family, the crowds, and the threat of a hurricane made her second guess that idea. She really had no idea where she could live and what she could do for work. After a few sessions together, and some time in meditation, she began to realize that she really loved to be out on open land. She loved pastures of green grass, with the hay bales sitting out in the fields. She loved seeing cows grazing. Something about their lazy chewing and slow movements brought her peace. This client didn’t want to be in the middle of nowhere though. She needed some social engagement and neighbors not too far away. I gave her the exercise below, and I’ll share what she came up with.
Try this exercise to plan out your dream day
This exercise seems simple, but if you don’t know what you like, it can take some thought. All you have to do is get a journal, and write out your vision for your dream day from start to finish. Who will be with you? Where will you be living? What is your job? Do you have a job? Write about the sounds, the smells, what you will eat, and where you will go.
Make sure you write out your day as if it is happening now, or as if it already happened. It’s like a letter to God or The Universe, that this is what you want your reality to look like. Your subconscious mind will internalize all the details and start moving you towards actions that will help you achieve this lifestyle. It’s a blueprint of sorts.
Imagine you are out driving around with your spouse, and you come across a home that looks just like the one in your vision. Then you start imagining that, yes, it is possible to have the home you desire. Then you notice there is an office in the area hiring for a position that is perfect for you. At another time in your life, you may not have even noticed this office, but now that you have written out your perfect day, suddenly you are open to a few changes in your life that you never realized were attainable before.
Once you have written out your perfect day, read over it every day for a few minutes. You can edit as needed.
What happened with my client
My client wrote out her perfect day, and she realized that she wanted to have the freedom of working from home, but be able to work with people some days of the week. Luckily, for her, when the pandemic happened, many companies went to remote work. She found a sales position where she calls on customers a couple of times a week, and works from home the rest of the time. She hasn’t found her dream home yet, but she is on the lookout for a place in the suburbs with a few acres and cows grazing nearby.
How long will it take to get the life of your dreams?
It can take anywhere from 1 day to several years to get to the life of your dreams. Enjoy the journey as you go. Look back and marvel at the things you’ve achieved each year. I made a decision to quit my teaching job to coach full-time, and everything started to fall into place in about a year. I knew I was close to retirement, but I thought I had another year of teaching to go. One day, I put my years of experience and my age in the retirement calculator online, and to my surprise, I could retire that school year! I was so excited! Now, I am working toward my dream of helping thousands of women, and finding my own dream home.
