10 Symptoms Caused By Ongoing Stress

You may have thought they were genetic or caused by an illness instead.

I Thought My Symptoms Were Inherited or Caused From an Illness

You may have thought your symptoms were genetic.  My symptoms manifest in digestive issues, just like my mother and grandfather.  One friend has hip issues, just like her sister, and a few other family members.  My son and his uncle on his father’s side have shoulder problems.  It may seem like these are genetic problems, and they are to a degree, but when you are not stressed, and in your healthiest state, these symptoms will disappear.  You can turn off that gene.  However, when you are under stress, with no way to reduce it or process your emotions, you turn on those weak genetic markers.

When an illness comes along, and causes stress to your system, again, you turn on those genetic markers for the weakest spot in your system.

So, why doesn’t every family member have the same symptoms when they’re under stress?  I have digestive problems, but one of my daughters gets migraines, and one of my daughters gets asthma and eczema.  None of my kids have the same digestive issues I did.

How Trauma and Repressed Emotions Contribute to Stress

Many of us that have chronic health symptoms have trauma from childhood.  We learned to repress our emotions as a survival skill.  You weren’t allowed to cry or be angry.  An adult told you that “Big kids don’t cry” or “You have nothing to be upset about.”  You were considered disrespectful if you spoke out about poor treatment.  Some of you may have even been physically harmed.

Now that you’re an adult, you have the right to speak up for yourself, but you may still subconsciously believe you don’t have that right.  You hold anger, criticism, resentment, guilt, and grief inside, which causes stress on the body.

Louise Hay says, in her book, Heal Your Body, “The mental thought patterns that cause the most dis-ease in the body are criticism, anger, resentment and guilt.”

10 Symptoms and Their Causes

According to Louise Hay and other ancient teachings, the symptoms below have an emotional cause.  See if any of these resonate with you.  (From the book, Heal Your Body, by Louise Hay.)

  1. Neck problems (spinal misalignment) – Refusing to see other sides.
  2. Migraines – Dislike of being driven, resisting the flow of life.
  3. Joint pain – Changes in direction of life, and the ease of these.
  4. Insomnia – Fear, not trusting, or guilt.
  5. Hip – Fear of going forward.
  6. Gas pains/bloating – Gripping. Fear.
  7. Foot – Fear of the future and stepping forward.
  8. Fatigue – Resistance, boredom, hating what you do.
  9. Anxiety – Not trusting the flow and process of life.
  10. Thyroid – Thinking, “I never get to do what I want.  When is it my turn?”

Bonus: Gray hair – Caused by stress.  (Look at pictures of past presidents, from the time they took office until the end of their term.  You will see a dramatic change in their hair.  Barack Obama comes to mind, as well as Bill Clinton and George Bush.  We can only imagine that presidency is one of the most stressful jobs on the planet.)

Healing Your Emotional Health Has a Positive Effect on Physical Health

“Our consistent thinking patterns create our experiences.  Therefore, by changing our thinking patterns, we can change our experiences.” – Louise Hay, in Heal Your Body

When you work on healing your mental health, your physical health improves.  When you work on healing your body, you will see changes in your mental health.  Have you ever seen a person go on a weight loss journey, or train to run a marathon, for example?  They start to change all areas of their life as they begin taking better care of themselves and build confidence.  The mind and body are connected.

If you want to fast track your healing, work on emotional and physical health at the same time.  It doesn’t have to be difficult.  You can read an inspiring book for 10 minutes, commit to adding one vegetable to every meal, take a daily walk outside, or listen to an uplifting podcast.  Small, simple changes, bring huge benefits.
